The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has congratulated Giorgia Melon after she was sworn in to the post of prime minister of Italy.
The American leader said he welcomes working with Melon in efforts to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
“E commend Giorgia Melon for choosing as Italy's new prime minister”, Biden said through a statement issued by the White House on 22 October.
Mellon has become Italy's first woman prime minister.
“Italy is NATO's vital ally and close partner, as our states together address common global challenges”, Biden said.
“As the leader of the G7, I expect to advance our support for Ukraine, so that Russia will be held responsible for its aggression, ensuring respect for human rights and democratic values and a sustainable economic growth”, he said.
Melon, whose nationalist party -- Italy's Brothers -- has neo-fascist roots -- led a right-wing coalition that won the 26 September elections.
At the helm of the Italian government, it succeeds Mario Draghin, who led a national unity government and was a supporter of European Union sanctions against Russia after Moscow began the invasion of Ukraine in late February.
Following concerns that Melon's right-wing government will withdraw from Ukraine's support, the new Italian prime minister has pledged that he will continue to support Kiev, despite objections from some members of the ruling coalition.
