Albanians do not stop asylum applications, in August passed them to Ukraine at war

The asylum applications by Albanian citizens in the European Union countries have accelerated growth during the summer months. According to Eurostat preliminary data for the January-August 2022 period, there were a total of 6,860 applications for EU asylum by Albanian citizens, with an increase of 68% compared to the same period last year.

However, in proportion to 2019, applications remain 41% lower.

States with the highest applications remain France, with 46% of total applications for 8-month and Germany, with 12%. The Albanian desire is the highest in Europe even compared to Ukraine at war.

Eurostat data shows that in August asylum applications by Albanians were nearly 1100, while Ukraine's in July (the last available data) were 950. Moreover, Ukraine has a population of 43 million, while Albania officially has about 2.8 million.

Total EU applications

According to Eurostat, in July 2022, 66,545 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU states) applied for international protection in the EU member states, 265 people more than in June 2022, which, in relative terms, means a very small increase of 0.4%.

Compared to July 2021 (44,760), there has been a 49% increase in the total number of requirements.

In July 2022, there were also 5,860 later applicants (persons who re-applicated for asylum after a decision had been made on a previous request), a 7% drop compared to June 2022 and a 2% increase compared to July 2021.

In July 2022, Syrians were the largest group of asylum seekers (910 applicants for the first time). They were followed by Afghans (8 150), followed by Venezuelan (3665), Pakistanis (3555) and Colombians (3 505).

In March 2022, there was a significant increase in Ukrainian asylum seekers for the first time (from 2-370 in February to 12 890 in March) because of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. The figures have come in decline every month: 1 510 in April, 1 295 in May, 975 in June and 950 in July.

That is also because people fleeing Ukraine benefit from temporary protection.

With 14095 applicants registered in July 2022, Germany continued to be a member state reporting the largest number of applicants for the first time for asylum in the EU, representing 21% of the total. Germany was succeeded by France (10890, 16%) and Austria (1025, 16%), Spain (8745, 13%) and Italy (5 105, 8%). /Monitor. al
