Only 9 cars have changed plates to RKS so far

The process of registering illegal license plates in the Kosovo Republic is moving slowly, even though all those who wish to change them are free of taxes and obligations that amount to up to 5,000 euros. Ardita Ademi Coordinator in the Northern Mitrovica municipality for Radio Kosovo said that from September 1st to today only nine citizens have registered cars on RKS license plates.

Even though the agreement on Kosovo's access to and exit documents and vice versa brought free circulation to the north, the issue of the agreement on vehicle plates continues to remain a matter awaiting solutions. But the number of citizens who have chosen to change plates and vehicles is very low.

Ardita Ademi Co-ordinator in the Mitrovica municipality for Radio Kosovo says only nine citizens have so far made the change of plates, and why there are numerous facilities from obligations totalling up to five thousand euros.

So far in all vehicle registration centers, there are only nine registered vehicles and all centers are ready to wait for citizens for the registration process. And I believe that by October 31st, citizens will use the relief they have”, Ademi said.

Leaders of responsible institutions in Kosovo have continued to call on Serbs to change vehicle plates from illegal to legal, or to RKS license plates. The change is projected to take place by October 31st, 2022. A few days ago, Minister of Internal Affairs Jhelal Svecla called for Serbs to impose legal Kosovo plates.

We have a decision by Kosovo institutions to pass these plates into legals by illegal. I'm convinced they will seize this chance in their best interests... A similar call came from the country's prime minister, Albin Kurti. He recently published a video recording in the Serbian language.

But Serbian citizens of the north disagree. Some of the citizens who don't want to be identified said: “if we have to do it... ”; “By no means, we have our records...”; “I don't want to know who gave it a deadline. What deadline is there that does not exist? ...”

Otherwise, there are 401,000 and 945 cars with RKS license plates in Kosovo. Of them, tens of thousands are owned by minority communities. What needs to be converted into plates RKS makes up about 2 percent of them”, Kurt said.

In northern Kosovo municipalities, inhabited by Serb majority Zvecan, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and North Mitrovica are estimated to circulate 10,000 cars with Serbian license plates.
