The EU budget for coping with crises in the Western Balkans will increase by 60% for the period 2021-2024. That would otherwise mean an increase of 350m euros”, EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhely said in his speech to Europarliamentists during the EC budget presentation.
During his speech at the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, the commissioner placed the most emphasis on illegal migration going through the Western Balkans with immigrants targeting union countries. Therefore, much of these funds will go towards fighting illegal migration.
It is the European Union's strategic interest to enable the full integration of the Western Balkans into the union. Only that would ensure long-term stability, peace and prosperity not only for the Western Balkans but also for the European Union“, he said, among other things.
