No date has yet been set for negotiations to begin, but sources have told ESPN wants City to solve problems before Sterling enters the last year of its existing agreement in June.
Sterling has contracts with City until the summer of 2023, and the long-term talks were interrupted until the 27-year-old made sure it is part of Pep Guardios' long-term plans.
The English lost his place on the Guardilla team at the end of last season but found his shape in this season, marking nine goals in 27 matches in all races.
It is also nominated as the best month “player” in Premier League for December after marking five goals and making an assistant in five matches for City -- goals that sent this team to first place.
Sources told about E The SPN that Sterling had considered a loan from City in January, but now has great expectations for it to stay in Etihad.
However, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid had considered his transfer to the summer of 2023 and Sterling remains open to play out at the end of his career.
Sterling is entering its last 18 months, but as a player and club it is said to be “relaxed” for the situation.
He scored 79 goals in three seasons during 2017 and 2020, Sterling played only 14 out of last season's 49 matches.
After winning his country, he has scored eight goals since early November, being praised as Guardila's key player.
His form helped City to make it nine points before Liverpool at Premier League while watching him win the fourth title in the last five years.
