The prime minister, Catherine Jacobsdottir, said she was sad at the allegations that have plunged the Icelandic football federation into crisis.
This federation has apologised to women involved before resigning its entire board, the BBC reports, translates Periscopi.
The scandal emerged last week after a woman charged with sexual abuse.
In an interview, Thorhlumur Gyda Arnansdottir, 25, accused a member of the national team of attacking him in September 2017 in the capital, Reykjavik.
Mrs. Arnasdottir said she and another woman had filed reports to the police against a sexual assault player that night.
The player, whose name has not been published, was reported to the police.
Icelandic media say other charges against former players and current national team players have circulated to social media for weeks.
Arnarsdottir has stated that she knew about at least six other national players charged with sexual assault.
The prime minister already addressed the scandal after a meeting with her cabinet, saying it was sad that these charges had to turn out to be debit for sexual abuse in football.
On July 16, 2021, the national captain and its biggest star, Gilfi Sigurdson, was arrested “in doubt of sexual assault on a child”. /Periscope
