Putin's most vocal critics were barred from participating in the elections, and there have been numerous reports of balloting and forced voting. but that the election commission rejected these claims, writes the BBC.
In his initial group of results, the commission said that with 64 per cent of the votes counted, United Russia had won nearly 48 per cent, followed by the Communist Party by about 21 per cent.
United Russia declared victory several hours after the polls closed Sunday evening.
