“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Still unknown to possible victims. When we can offer additional information”, said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.
Heavy images of people left injured by this blast have already been published.
The news agency, Reuters quoted an American official as saying that according to an initial report, the blast was caused by a suicide attacker.
American President Joe Biden has been informed of the incident, a White House official has said.
Earlier, the United States and other Western countries warned their citizens to leave the area around Kabul, due to threats of a terrorist attack by terrorist organisations I SIS.
