Blinken: We'll give Kosovo 500 thousand vaccines, 20 percent of the target for vaccine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has posted a photo on Twitter following the US donation of Pfizer vaccines to Kosovo.

Blinken has written that today the first contingent of 500 thousand Pfizer doses has been donated in total to Kosovo by the United States of America, drawing it close to the target of vaccine.

“Today, the US donated the first contingent of 500 thousand Pfizer doses for Kosovo, bringing 20 per cent closer to the target for vaccine. Delivered through COVAX, this gift represents common values and steadfast ties between our peoples”, Blinken wrote.

This 35,100 dose container of the vaccine against Coronavirus is within the donation of over 500,000 vaccines that the US will donate to Kosovo through the COVAX programme, aimed at distributing vaccines to poor countries.

At the ceremony organised in Pristina, following the arrival of this contingent, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said she had written to the American president in March, Joe Biden, asking to send vaccines to Kosovo.

The value of this vaccine donation goes beyond numbers. Today, solidarity prevails and strong friendship between the United States and the Republic of Kosovo is confirmed. The move is the stamp of our popular expression that the good enemy is seen on difficult days”, Osmani said.

Meanwhile, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that despite Kosovo being the last state in the region to begin the communication process in late March, this process, according to him, is going well and stressed that by the end of the year the government's goal will be achieved, to vaccinate 60 percent of the population.

“We are facing a difficult pandemic, whose final solution is vaccination”, he added.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Pristina Philip Costnett recalled that his country is the largest donor of COVAX to which he contributed $2 billion.

This gift from the American people is the largest donation of vaccines that Kosovo has received from any single state or organisation”, Costnett said.

He called on Kosovo citizens to be vaccinated, as he stressed that only “together we can defeat COVID-19”.

The new donation of vaccines from the US came on the day when Kosovo registered record numbers of new cases, 2,250 infections within one day and four victims respectively.

So far, in Kosovo 227,581 people have been fully vaccinated, with both doses of vaccine. Meanwhile, the total number of doses administered is 666,476.
