The law, given in 1996, required that the number of parking lots in the city be held at the same level as 1990, broadcast The Local, conveys albinfo.ch.
Known as “The historic compromise of parking lot” meant that whenever one parking space was removed from the city, another had to be built or created to replace it.
The city's ruling Social Democrats argued that more space was needed so that pedestrians could extend and walk”.
So far there has been no concrete indication of how many parking lots on earth will be removed, but the city said in a press release the focus will be on improving city areas for pedestrians rather than “the number of parking spaces”.
The 1996 law itself was also passed in favour of pedestrians, while it also balanced drivers' needs.
The purpose of the law was to ensure that the total number of parking lots did not fall when points were removed for activities centered on pedestrians.
New countries were often created in underground parts, reports Switzerland's 20 - minute news report.
While the Social Democrats were joined by FDP, GLP and EPP, conservative SVP rejected the plans.
