A total of six British olympists have been forced to isolate themselves, for on their flight to Tokyo, it proved positive with Avid-19.
“Sportsmail” understands that the group does not include medal hopes Dina Asher-Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Laura Muir, Yemen Reekie, Adam Gemili, Andy Pozzi, Elliot Giles, Keely Hodgkinson and Dan Rowden.
The news comes as a major blow ahead of Friday's opening ceremony and raises further questions on the decision to organise the Olympic Games during a pandemic.
A British Olympic Society spokesman on this occasion said:
“We can confirm that six athletes and two staff members from the athletic team, who without any fault have been identified as the close contacts of an individual, not from the altete group delegation to their flight on 15 July 2021. ”
This was identified through the Tokyo 2020 reporting service, and the group has since begun a period of self-isolation in their rooms at the BOA Preparation Camp, in line with the Tokyo 2020 Playbook protocols.”
