A 60-year-old whiskey managed to steal diamonds worth about 4.8m euros after it was presented as a trained and qualified person to recognize and appreciate jewels.
According to The Guardian, Lulu Lakatos deceived silversmiths claiming her job was to professionally control diamonds from the Boodles company in central London, and then with a delicate hand move, he replaced them with ordinary stones.
Lakatos praised seven diamonds in a shop in New Bond Street before putting them in a bag, the court said.
Her deception was discovered only when the same bag was opened again, in which ordinary stones were found.
The “Dialants were stolen with a very quick and delicate hand movement, and the lady in question played a central role in this extremely sophisticated plot that required much planning and risk taking”, prosecutor Philip Scott said.
Lakatos, a Romanian of origin but a French resident, denied plotting to steal on March 10, 2016.
Last September, Lakatos was arrested in France on a European warrant and extradited to the United Kingdom, with the trial following.
