FIFA president's words about the Super European League

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, in an interview given to the Spanish newspaper “AS” made clear the position of the institution it heads in connection with the recent developments of Europe's so-called Superleague. He stressed that as FIFA president, his responsibility is to protect all football everywhere. “We support [...]

“UEFA in its category and rejection of the Superleague. We are against and will always oppose any competition that is not part of the international football structure and that threatens unity and solidarity, which should always exist in the football pyramid, which links basic football and amateur football to the protagonists of this sport.

Saying that, it is also my obligation to mediate between the parties in order to start a deep and constructive dialogue in search of positive solutions. We have to tackle football problems together”.

Infantino later focused on possible sanctions for clubs that started the project.

“There are control mechanisms that guarantee solidarity so that less privileged teams can benefit, even in part, from success and popularity. As for sanctions, there are competent and independent organs that will analyze what can and should be done about these clubs, so it is not my duty to talk about them. Of course, this does not mean that sanctions are excluded national, continental, or global. I said it once and I repeat, now, clearly: clubs either be part of the football structures or have to deal with the consequences. ”

Football, Infantino points out, is based on fans.

They must be the center of everything we do. Without their fans and passions, football wouldn't be who it is, and we should keep that in mind. Football is and must be essentially for fans and we must find ways to protect their interests. Investments in football are welcome, but as long as they are transparent and there are control mechanisms that ensure a competitive balance, as well as a healthy and sustainable sector”.
