Thousands of fans of both Manchester City and Chelsea have landed in Porto in front of the Saturday Champions League final, and apparently this led to various incidents among supporters.
The chaotic scenes also reportedly saw the followers of two English teams get involved in bickering with local police, which experts say could lead to an added security presence in the city before Saturday's show match.
The violence comes days after similar episodes in Gdansk, Poland, in which there were clashes between Manchester United supporters and locals on the eve of United's loss of penalty to Villarreal in Wednesday.
Estadio do Dragao is set to host Saturday's final after moving from Istanbul for the second consecutive year amid concerns about the spread of Covid-19, with Turkey remaining in the “redlist of the United Kingdom of countries considered dangerous to travel.
About 16,500 fans are expected to participate in the game, a figure that is about 33 per cent of the size of the 50,000 stadium. Fans are forced to provide a negative test PCR to win entrance to the stadium.
However, Portuguese public - health chiefs have asked English supporters not to spend much time in the city.
“The people who come to the Champions League finals will come and return on the same day, with a test made in a bubble situation, i.e., on cruise flights to a waiting zone,” explained State Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva, earlier this month.
Then they will go to the stadium and then to the airport, being on national territory less than 24 hours, in a bubble approach and with mandatory tests, in principle, before boarding the plane. ”
