Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim state, but it officially recognizes other religions. Recently, however, concerns have increased over the spread of religious intolerance.
The decree to ban the obligation for religious clothing was signed on Wednesday, while schools not implementing it could be fined.
Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makrim said: “The choice to wear religious clothing is individual, not school decision. ”
The school principal in which the case with the Christian girl later apologized and said that her dress would be allowed according to her religious beliefs.
