Pandemia, which fell suddenly across the world of Albania, has changed many plans, as well as many demographic indicators in the country. Carantina, which lasted between mid-March and early May, completely paralysed life in the country. But the following months were no longer the same, with increased care and limited movement.
Official data shows that the number of marriages has contracted significantly in 2020. According to statistics that Albanian institutions report near Eurostat, about 17.5 thousand acts of marriage in the country last year were linked. This is the lowest number of marriages reported since 1990. Compared to the previous year, the celebration fell by 22%.
According to the months, the contraction began as early as March, where only 640 acts of marriage were linked from nearly 1,700 to the same period a year ago. In April, only 71 acts of marriage were performed at the peak of quarantine, with a contraction of 96% compared to the same month a year ago. Even in May, although growing in April, their number dropped by 76% on an annual basis.
The highest number of marriages was realised in August, with nearly 2300, again contracting by about 9% compared to last August -- a tendency that is related to returning holiday migrants. Even in the following months, although restrictions were less, the number of marriages continued to decline (-11.7% in September and -14.3% in October). In November alone, a level similar to the month of the previous year (-4.5%) was marked. The return of restrictions in December and the setback of immigrants to come as a result of increased demands in the countries they live in, resulted in the acts of marriages dropping by about 13.4% in December.
Even before the pandemic, the number of marriages in the country was on the decline, reflecting on population aging, high migration, lifestyle change, increased marriage age, and so on. They have dropped by an average of 22-23 thousand years from 30,000 in the early 1990s. The decline of marriages, but above all the ban on organizing wedding ceremonies has seriously damaged and related industries, since the event organisation companies, those of clothing, musicians, makeup and so on.
Monetary losses for wedding - organizing businesses in Albania, due to their failure, account for about 165m euros, according to a sector pioneer study, Mr. Armand Peza. In his study, company director “Geraldina Sposa” says there are 27 thousand people in the unemployed sector, or with reduced salaries, or less than 1/4 of the staff of the 1,350 event subjects, including: the wedding halls, cameramen, photographers, musicians, DJ, professional lighting, fossil employees, rental cars, etc.
The absence of weddings and events also feels at the work of Wyvara Hajdari, model-up artist. Its professional makeup focuses on working with public persons, wedding brides, seniors, immigrants and locals, but from pandemic, requirements have been reduced.
“Pandemia has changed everything, to our way of waking up in the morning, not to events anymore. Of course, there are many weddings that are moved on indefinitely. There are weddings without many people, but the most superstitious are getting married. Of course, they didn't come from abroad, like they used to, there's a shortage here. However, the work continues, and certainly with measures and masks, because health comes first”, it stated earlier on the Monitor.
