The Instagram's new features of teen safety

Social Network “Instagram” announced yesterday that it will launch new features in an effort to improve teen safety on apps, such as parental controls and an option to prevent people from labeling or reporting to teenagers. The changes come one day before Instagram CEO Adam Moser gives up [...]

The changes come one day before Instagram CEO Adam Moser surrendered to Congress for the first time. Mosser's appearance follows reports that Facebook and Instagram are aware of the damage their apps and services are doing, including teen mental health.

An internal Facebook source originally reported by the Wall Street Journal said that among teenagers reporting suicide ideas, 13% of British users and 6% of American users found the issue in the Instagram. The reports were based on thousands of pages of internal documents provided by former employee and Facebook informant Francis Hogen. More than 40% of Instagram users are 22 years old and down, according to internal documents discovered and Instagram has since banned plans to create a particular version of the child app.

Mosser may point to some of the new features to protect his company's work before lawmakers.

The Institute will prevent users from labeling or reporting teenagers who do not, for example. He will also start suggesting other topics if a teenager spends too much time on a particular interest, the company said. Tools for parents and caregivers will also appear next year that allow parents to see and limit the time their teenagers spend in the Instagram and report to parents if one teenager mentions another user.

Another feature, called “Take a Break”, will require users to stop using the Instagram less and to give memories to users to take longer holidays, the Instagram said. The function, which must initially be activated, will be published in the US, Canada and Australia on Wednesday, and for all users early next year, the Instagram said.

After reports of the toxic effects of the Instagram, we want to hear directly from the company leadership, because it uses powerful algorithms that drive harmful content to children who take them to dark places and what it will do to make its platform safer”, Senator Richard Blumenthal said at CNBC.
