“However, public displays of love, which are detestable to us, must be avoided. This is the only indication to be respected, otherwise everyone can live their lives”.
These are the words of the executive director of the World Cup organising committee “catar 2022x1>, Nasser al Khater, who talked about human rights controversy.
The executive director responded to Australian footballer Josh Cavallo, who came out last month under the impression that “was afraid to go to play the first World in an Arab country where homosexuality, under the law of maturity, could be sentenced to death”
Al Khater, interviewed by CNN and Independent, spoke of the situation under the next World Cup, adding that “homosexuals can come to Qatar as all fans and can behave like any other”.
What I say, simply, is that from the point of view of public efficiency, ours is a conservative society. We know that the World is a possible stage for protests on these issues, but we're not worried”.
Of course, players who are openly gay will not be allowed to move freely, because there may be unexpected attacks on them by fans outside the stadium.
