Lekaj shows her way to Zagreb politics.
I first started as an Albanian student who came to study in Croatia. And during my association with Croatian students I have seen that they have a lot of prejudice about the Albanian community. Even with my activities, I have seen that if we fail to have political influence on Croatian society, we have achieved nothing. The Constitutional Law of the Republic of Croatia enables minorities to have an MP in Croatia's parliament. In my first term, I won with very few votes and managed for the first time to represent Bosniaks and four other communities belonging to that group”, Lekaj tells A2 CNN.
The awareness and factorisation of Albanians in Croatia has changed since Lekaj's mandate in the Assembly.
“has begun to talk more openly about Albanian contributions. We always mention that we Albanians make a big contribution both economically and in Croatia's domestic war we have made a contribution. We have not had culture houses in Croatia, and in every district we are buying houses to be owned by Albanian associations, so that their members will have the opportunity to engage and deal with their culture”, says the MP in the Croatian Parliament.
Lekaj has directly influenced Croatia's commitment to the two Albanian states, Albania and Kosovo. It has listed some of the achievements in the field of infrastructure among countries.
“What is my mission at this moment is to perceive the government and all other Croatian institutions to be as close as possible to Kosovo and each time goes with that reason that Kosovo is a new state that has now begun to walk and needs someone to help. I have arrived with Croatian deputies, with the ministers to pay a visit to Kosovo, and this visit is not just a procession. An economic co-operation was achieved, and soon on 15 December the airline between Pristina and Zagreb” will open, she adds.
Although resident in Croatia, Lekaj often visits Tirana, and Pristina where no discussions are lacking with local officials on issues of interest and co-operation between the parties.
