Portugal suffered defeat in last moments from Serbia on Sunday evening, thus losing its first position to already compete at Play - Off for a place in Qatar.
Portugal along with several other teams will play via “play-off” and below you find information about this format.
When will play-off games take place?
Play-off matches will take place early next year between 24 March and 29 March.
That means Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot will play decisive games in what may be a critical point in the Manchester United season.
The tournament for play-off will be launched Friday, November 26th at 4: 00 p.m.
How do the playoffs work?
There will be 12 teams in playoff. These consist of 10 teams that finished second in their group, plus two teams that were best listed by the U Nations League. EFAs that haven't qualified yet.
There will be three groups, each with one semifinal and one final.
Only three teams out of 12 will participate in the World Cup. This makes Portugal's loss to Serbia potentially very costly.
Who might Portugal face?
Together with Portugal at play-off is Sweden and Victor Lindeloff, who lost from Spain and ended up second in their group.
Scotland, Northern Macedonia and Russia are also at play-off after securing second place in their group.
Other groups have not yet been completed and will be in the next few days.
Teams currently occupying second countries, which could change include Wales, Finland, Turkey, Poland and Switzerland.
The Netherlands and Italy may fall, while Norway and Ukraine can still emerge.
Austria and the Czech Republic currently aim to qualify in play-off through U ranking EFA Nations League.
The main dates of the Qatar World Cup 2022:
Rest at Premier League
Club football will cease after the weekend, November 12th-13th. 16 league matches will be played, while the season will start on 6 August.
Open Game
The 2022 World opening match will take place on Monday, November 21.
End Date
The 2022 World Cup final will be played Sunday on December 18th.
Premier League Restart
Premier League resumes at Boxing Day on December 26th, with the season ending on May 28th.
