The former midfielder has been chosen to succeed Fernando Batista, who left to take over Venezuela.
His first coaching challenges will be the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, to be held in 2023.
If there are results, Mascherano would also be the coach of the Argentina Olympic team for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Mascherano's technical team will consist of Pablo Blanco, physical coach and assistant Alejandro Sabella and Oscar Hernandez Romero.
