The news has been known for days, but officialization has already arrived: Guanyu Zhou will replace Antonio Giovinazzi in the direction of Alfa Romeos and compete alongside Walter Bottas at the next World Championship in Forum 1.
The Chinese, former Ferrari Academy pilot, is ranked second in the Forum 2 Championship and comes to F1 with a significant sponsorship of 30m euros and the drive of all Chinese people.
Since I took my first steps in this sport, I've always dreamed of reaching as high as Jou said at the moment of signing and now the dream has been realized.
It's a privilege to have the opportunity to start my career in Forum 1 with an icon team like Alpha Romeo Racing, a team that has brought so many talented young people to their debut throughout his history. I know I'm having a very exciting challenge, but I think I'm prepared and I'll have a high-level pilot like Walter Bottas on the team.
I want to thank Alpha Romeo Racing's team for this opportunity, the goal will be to learn as much and as soon as possible.
I'm aware of what it means to be the first Chinese pilot to have the chance to compete in Forum 1, is an important turning point for the entire motor transport movement in my country.
There will be many hopes and expectations, and this aspect will help me to further boost my motivation to reach more and more”.
The team's director, Vasseur, later welcomed Giovinazin: “T) Say goodbye to a pilot is never easy, especially in Antonio's case, which has been part of the team for so long. As we separate, we will keep memories of good times and take lessons from the bad ones, knowing that these moments have made us grow together as a team. We wish Antonio the best for his future after the 2021 season: before that, we still have three races to get some good results together and finish the year in the best way”.
