The European Parliament adopted a comprehensive resolution on EU sports policy this Tuesday and called for legal action to protect the sport from the threat of breakaway races as Europe's Superliga was conceived.
Proposed by Eurodeputt Tomasz Francoowski, former Polish national player, the resolution was adopted by the overwhelming majority of members of the European Parliament by the Union's 27 member states. UEFA said in a footnote welcomes the resolution, an important step forward in developing the European model of sports based on values, solidarity and credit.
“Report Francoski” includes specific and applicable recommendations in areas such as good governance, solidarity, gender equality, diversity and fundamental rights, integrity, basic football, sustainability, health and well-being.
As a key political institution, the European Union Parliament is convinced of the main threats facing sports on our continent. Eurodeputs strongly condemn separatist races, as is the so-called Superleague, because they undermine European sports values and principles, thinking only of elite interests and benefits, regardless of inclusive decision making.
The European Parliament also rejects the latest proposal for a World Cup once in two years, urging sports organisations to respect the current frequency of major international sports events. The resolution also calls for development of regulatory frameworks to modernise players' transfer systems and meet Europe's specific needs, standards and goals. UEFA will work together with football federations and leading European football actors -- fans, players, clubs and leagues -- to achieve the goals of the resolution and to implement its recommendations.
