Jean-Mark Saw was talking about launching the long report on sexual abuse.
He said that the number could increase to 330 thousand, if abuse was included by other members of the church involved, reports the BBC.
One victim called the report a turning point for France's history.
The report is based on church archives, courts and police, as well as on interviews about victims.
Most of the cases assessed by the panel are believed to be too old to be persecuted under French law. /Periscope
