Thornton was taken out of the ring with a stretcher and reportedly had been hospitalised since the Mechi, where he died.
Finally, the one who caused his death also reacted, Cleckler, who wrote in an Instagram post:
As a warrior, nothing prepared him for the news this morning on my way to training.
Some of you may not have heard yet, but my last opponent Justin Thornton died last night because of pneumonia. I can't help feeling absolutely destroyed because I've known Justin for years. Not many people know that, but we fought eight years ago and he immediately told me that he wanted the rhyme. I know that when he got the call to finally get that rimech on a bigger scene, he saw a great opportunity and used it. Justin is a warrior. It was in his blood to fight. He loved her. He fought everyone at all times and everywhere, and when I had no opposers, he still threw out the opportunity to go in there with me again.
Whatever man or woman gets into the ring is a special thing, they get a risk that 99% of the world would never take and sometimes I don't even know why. But Justin was a fighter all his life and he deserves nothing but respect. My prayers and my thoughts are with Justin Thornton and his family. Rest in peace.” /Periscope. com/
