“Muratov and Resa have followed the facts They have worked to control abuse of power, expose corruption and seek transparency”, the White House chief's statement said.
“For their dedication to basic principles of free press ʹ principles that are inseparable from healthy democracy they have faced constant threats, intimidation, legal measures and, in the case of Muratov, with the death of his colleagues”, it is further said in the American president's statement.
Muratov is one of the founders of the newspaper “Noovaya” in 1993 and has been editor-in-chief of it for 24 years, writes Radio Free Europe, Report Express.
The Nobel Committee said the newspaper “Novaya” is the most independent newspaper in Russia today and has defended freedom of expression in Russia under increasingly challenging conditions.
The committee highly praised critical approach to power and journalism based on the fact and professional integrity of the paper.
The newspaper “Noovaya” has faced threats, violence and murder. Since its establishment, six journalists have been killed, including Anna Politkovskaya, who reported high-level corruption in Russia and human rights violations in Chechnya.
