Pope Francis has named Diego Armando Maradona poet in the field.
In an interview with Italy's daily sports newspaper, “La Gazzetta dello Sport” The Pope remembered his childhood when he played soccer.
He is a huge fan of Maradona, who died in November.
“In the field was a poet, the wonderful champion who brought entertainment to millions, in Argentina and Naples”, Papa Francisescu has said.
Maradona was submitted to Naples in 1984-1991, winning two titles of Serie A and a UEFA Cup. In 1986, he led Argentina to triumph at the World Cup.
While expressing love for the sport, Pope Francis has criticised athletes using doping.
“Doping in sports is not just cheating, it's the way that destroys dignity. Better is a clean loss than a dirty victory. I wish this to the whole world, not just the sport”, he added.
