Russian opposition leader Alexei Navally is headed from Germany to Russia, where he may face arrest.
I'm gonna arrest you? I am innocent”, Navajo told reporters before boarding the Pobeda plane, which is owned by the state company, the Aeroflower.
On January 13th, he announced he would return to Russia, despite warnings from the Federal Correcting Service that he would be arrested.
Last month, this service demanded that Navally return from Germany immediately or face imprisonment in Russia, after saying that Navally has violated the terms of parole, related to a 2014 conviction for fraud.
Navalny is one of the most vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After sitting in his seat on the plane, Navajo said he was happy to be home.
This is the best moment in the past five months. I feel good, I'm finally going back to my city of”
Asked if he thinks Russian authorities will arrest him, he said he is innocent.
Why would I be afraid? What's wrong with me in Russia? I believe I feel like any Russian citizen who has the right to return home”, he said.
According to documents from a Russian court, Navajo could face up to three years in prison.
Navalny on this flight was accompanied by his wife Yulia and his spokeswoman.
Navajo stayed six months in Germany, where he received medical treatment after being poisoned. He has blamed Russian authorities for poisoning.
In August, he became ill while traveling from Tomsk to Moscow. Navalny is said to have poisoned his nervous agent, Novico.
His supporters said they would host Navalny at Moscow's Vukovo airport, despite the temperature in Moscow at the time of Navalny's arrival, will be -20 degrees Celsius, and despite Russia facing high levels of coronary cases.
So far, 2,000 people on the social network Facebook have said they will come out to host Navajo.
Moscow's Prosecutor's Office has warned that this rally is illegal and has warned Navajo supporters not to go to the airport, or otherwise they may be arrested or fined.
The Reuters agency reports that at Moscow's Vnuvo airport, there is increased presence of police forces.
Navalny, who expects to succeed in parliamentary elections to be held in September, can also face three court processes, which, according to him, are politically motivated. /rel
