An arrest warrant was issued Thursday to current United States President Donald Trump over the murder of an Iranian general and an Iraqi militia leader last year, Iraqi judicial authorities said.
The warrant was issued by a judge in Baghdad, investigating the United States-based attack that left General Qassim Solejmani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis dead, the Iraqi court said.
They were killed in the attack, which took place last January at Baghdad Airport, the AP reports.
Al-Muhandis was the deputy head of an Iraqi militia supported by Iranian groups. Meanwhile, Soleiman was commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Kurdish Forces.
The murder charge in Iraq has the death penalty. But this warrant against Trump is more symbolic as the president is in the last days of his presidency.
The decision to issue this order was said to take place “after the judge had received statements from Abu Mahdi's family al-Muhadis”, who are in the quality of the plaintiffs. The investigation into these murders is continuing, the Supreme Court Council announced.
The planned US attack caused a diplomatic crisis between Iraq and the US, and lawmakers had passed a resolution on the Iraqi Parliament calling on the government to expel foreign troops from the state. /rel
