The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has held a telephone conversation with Russia's president, Vladimir Putin. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that during the conversation, Beden has raised concerns about Russian activities, including the treatment and imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navlany.
“Biden also said Washington strongly supports Ukraine's sovereignty, in the face of continued Russian aggression”, Psaki said.
Kremlin confirmed the call through a statement on the website, saying Putin congratulated Biden on taking office and that both leaders cut satisfaction “over the exchange of diplomatic notes for reaching an agreement on extending the Treaty for Reducing Strategic Arms (New START).
Kremlin critic Alexei Navajo was imprisoned last weekend after arriving in Moscow from Germany. In the German state, Navalny was treated after poisoning his nervous agent, Novico. He has blamed the Russian president, Putin for poisoning.
Russia annexed the Ukraine Crime region in 2014, and Moscow-backed separatists began an uprising in Donbas, eastern Ukraine.
The conflict has left more than 13,000 people dead. Russia denies any role in the conflict.
