Djokovic, then apologised by saying he's extremely sorry “ ”.
The world's number one tennis player was disqualified in the fourth round of the match with Spanish Pablo Carreno Busta, due to the incident.
The whole situation has really left me sad and empty”, Djokovic said through a post in the Instagram.
I am extremely sorry that I caused such stress [judges]”, he added.
The judge, who was shot in the throat at a moment of Djokovic's anger, is in good health.
“As for the disqualification, I must work on my frustration and turn it into a lesson for my growth as a player and as a human being”, Djokovic said.
The US Open 2020 tennis tournament started last week in New York.
The Open takes place without spectators in stadiums because of the coronary pandemic.
