Pompeo, who arrives on an official visit to Greece tonight, wrote on Twitter that he had talked to Stoltenberg about “de-disabilisation of the situation in the eastern Mediterranean” and again “uri noted the importance of NATO unity”.
The increasingly tense relations between Greece and Turkey, two NATO members, have further exacerbated this year due to long disagreements, including the maritime border issue and the right to seek oil and gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean. Greece has France's strong support in the dispute.
Pompeo is scheduled to arrive in Thessaloniki shortly after midnight, as part of a five-day tour of Europe, during which he will visit Italy, the Vatican and Croatia.
The State Department announced that Pompeo will meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Nikolaos Dendias to encourage the two countries' joint commitment to strengthening security, peace and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean and to show the best relations between Washington and Athens.
