A special court in The Hague has begun hearing hearings in war crimes committed by Kosovo's serperia fighters more than two decades ago after the war for independence from Serbia and after nine years after a prosecutor was appointed to investigate reports of atrocities.
Over the past week, Kosovo Specialised Chambers have ordered the arrest of three former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who were arrested by EULEX police and transferred to the Netherlands. Two of them have appeared before the judges, in a specially built court chamber equipped with transparent screens as a precautionary measure against the choreography, writes The Guardian, broadcast The Express.
The start of the special court's follow-up hearings could have profound effects on Kosovo and on strained relations with Serbia. In June, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci was charged by the special prosecutor for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The charges have not yet been confirmed by a judge. Thaci has been interviewed on charges in July and has expressed his innocence.
