Ivan Safronov was arrested during this morning by FSB agents, the agency that followed the famous KGB. He could face 20 years in prison.
“Safranov, with the orders of the NATO countries' secret services, collected and broadcast classified information as state secrets for military, defence and security co-operation in the Russian Federation,” is said in a statement issued by the FSB, Periskpoi explains.
Safronov spent nearly a decade working for the daily Kommersant newspaper, writing mainly for the Russian Army, as well as for arms and space industry agreements. He had also briefly worked in the Kremlin, accompanying President Vladimir Putin on trips.
He had been laid off in Kommersant in May 2019, following an article on Valentina Mavienko, who is head of the Russian Parliament's upper house.
In solidarity with him, the entire political descu had resigned. He had later made his way to Vedomosti, one of Russia's only independent newspapers.
In May, Safronov was given work in Roscosmos, the Russian Space Agency, as special adviser to the head of the organisation.
The FSB did not provide immediate information on the kind of secrets Safronov had shared with foreign services. /Periscope
