Following the failure to include the Joint Basketball League between Kosovo and Albania, the Kosovo Superleague team, Ponte Prizren, has decided that the 2020/21 edition will be presented to compete in the Balkan League (BIBL).
Attending this regional league has confirmed the coach of Ponte Prizren, Arbnor Rifatti, adding that all details will be disclosed early next month, when the team will also apply to be part of the BIBL in the new edition.
Indeed, Ponte Prizren has made the decision to play in the BIBL to avoid being limited to Kosovo's championship races, where the new edition is set to begin on September 23rd.
The Kosovo Basketball Federation (FBK) weeks ago selected four teams from Kosovo that will participate in the Joint League with Albania, which will live in the new season. Sigal Pristina, Peja, Rahoveci and Golden Eagle Star are the teams the new edition will play in the Common League, aimed at compensation for the non-participation of teams from Kosovo at the European Cup Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup. Even FBK leaders had said they have no interest in participation in the BIBL, where Kosovo teams have been competing since 2013. The FBK had said that the teams do not deny participation in the Balkan League, though it was claimed to belong to the past.
We'll participate in the BIBL to have more matches in the new edition, and not limit ourselves to the Superleague because we're not playing the Common League. But it's all going to be official early next month”, Coach Rifat said briefly.
The FBK has earlier announced that no Kosovo team in the 2020/21 season will play in European cups until it has acknowledged that the opportunity is open to the BIBL, although the focus remains on the Common League. The 2019/20 edition in Kosovo had been cancelled due to the spread of the Coronavirus, without being declared the champion.
