Well, that's what happened to Luke Garbutt.
He joined Everton from Leeds at 16 years of age, but yesterday (March) he was released after his contract was concluded.
During that time, he made only 12 presentations with the last team came in 2014/15,
While it was under contract in “Goodson Park”, he's been lending to Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan, Oxford and, this season, Isupwch.

He then turned to someone off the camera, asking “who?” again. He then conceded defeat and said he did not expect that question and that he did not know it.
Brilliant. But what's Garbut's attitude about this? Did I hate that Anceplott didn't know who he was?
Not at all.
He made some funny posts to show he took it in sports.
Don't get me wrong, I decided to look at the ridiculous side, other players would feel disrespected by the club and the coach,” he wrote in one post.
It's not his fault, it's the club, it's class anyway.” /Periscope. com/
