German car manufacturer Volkswagen announced today that he is giving up building a factory in Turkey due to the economic crisis caused by the coronary pandemic.

The decision is the result of “a collapse of the global demand for cars caused by the coronary crisis”, the VW said.

The company aims to build a factory in the Manis province of western Turkey and has already established a branch that is registered at the local trade court with a registered capital of about $134m.

The factory was to produce up to 300,000 cars per year, creating 4,000 new jobs in the region, but the pandemic thwarted plans.

In today's context, the creation of new capacities is not necessary, a VW spokesman said. All projects planned regarding vehicles will be implemented in the facilities within the existing VW network, he added.

Construction of the factory in Turkey was first halted in October 2019 due to Turkey's military intervention in neighbouring Syria, which brought widespread criticism of Ankara's government at the expense of human rights violations, Kosovo Presses broadcasts.
