The renowned Hungarian water polost Tibor Benedek has died today at the age of 48, Hungary's Waterpolos Federation has announced.
Benedek, born in Budapest, was one of the most popular athletes in Hungary until he withdrew in May because of his illness.
He is the triple Olympic champion, and then Hungary's selector.
During his career, he has won dozens of local and international titles.
In addition to Olympic gold medals won by Hungary in 2000, 2004 and 2008, he also won world and European titles.
Seven times he was declared champion in Italy, six times in Hungary, while five times he won Euroleague.
As Hungary's selector, he achieved the greatest success in 2013 when he was proclaimed world champion.
For Hungary, as a player, it was presented at 437 matches.
