Films intended to win prices “Oscar” in the future will have to meet diversity criteria.
The ruling of the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences comes after numerous criticisms of racial inequality in the film industry, as colored people are less appreciated.
For the next five years, therefore, a special group is set to be established that will reveal the guidelines and criteria of diversity for competitive films.
Through a statement, it points out that the group will co-operate with the “Gwild Productions” in the US to develop “standard representation and inclusion” and “will encourage equal practices of getting to work inside and outside”.
But the new rules will not apply to films competing for Oscars at the next ceremony in 2021.
Criticism of the film academy intensified in 2015 with the hashtag #Oscars SooWhite, a response against a sweeping campaign of acting contenders.
The academy responded in part by doubling the number of colored people in its ranks. By 2019, however, only 316 of its approximately 8,000 members were colored people.
