Naomi Osaka sets a record: Japanese tennis player in 2019 has been the world's most paid sports athlete. The $37.4 million ( Forbes figures) have not only been designed at the top of the annual ranking but also allowed it to set an absolute record. In fact, Osaka becomes the most paid athlete of all times by beating the record set in 2015 by Maria Sharapova, who had stopped at $29.7 million.
According to Forbes, 22-year-olds have won in 2019 a total of $37.4m in awards and sponsorship contracts, passing with a few US rival Serena Williams, who has been placed on the podium for the past four years, holds the total career record of over $300 million earned over the years.
With Haytian and Japanese mother, Osaka has managed to be number 1 in the world rankings of ATP (28 January 2019), after winning two Grand Slam tournaments in a row: The US Open at 2018 of the Australian Open in 2019. Actually she's number 10 in the ringing ATP. Professional from 2014, in coincidence with her 16th birthday, Osaka is the first Japanese tennis player to win a first Grand Slam and Asian tournament to become the world's number 1.
