It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, said Zilur Rahman, director of the fire service. Firefighters extinguished the flames in about an hour, Rahman said.
Five troops were seized from the isolation unit of the United Hospital dealing with COVID-19 patients, Rahman said. The dead included four men and a woman between 45 and 75 years of age, he said.
Hospitals are trying to deal with large numbers of coronary infections in Bangladesh, which reported 38,229 cases and 544 deaths.
Some health experts are concerned that the actual number of cases may be higher in a country of more than 160 million people, many of whom have only limited access to health care.
