In Brussels, they stress the importance of a functioning media sector in Europe with the goal of promoting democracy, freedom, diversity and European creativity.
“We are fully aware of the seriousness of the impact of the virus's pandemic on the media sector in Europe and beyond. Local media and journalists are very affected and have serious economic problems “, said Commission spokesman Christian Wiegand.
Many EU institutions officials have been declared on the occasion of a journalists strike by the Italian news agency ANSA, who are protesting the reduced warning of working hours, but also of the budget for their salaries.
European Parliament President David Sasol, and Commission Vice President Vera Jurova express solidarity with journalists, stressing their overall role in European society, especially during the COVID19 pandemic.
“in these dramatic information quality cannot be exposed to restrictions and savings. This would be a blow to everyone's freedom in”, Sasol said.
The European Commission stresses that within the roadmap for economic recovery, instruments are made available to member states that serve, among other things, to support the media sector.
“We will continue to mobilise EU funds so that large and small media in Europe can overcome this crisis,” say in the EC.
