The director of the Public Health Institute in São Paulo, the most affected city, admits that they are losing their battle with the virus.
We're losing our battle with the virus and that's the reality. The virus is winning the war now. Now vacations come, but I don't see them as vacations. I see them as the day of battle. These are the most important days in the fight against the Coronavirus”, he said.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has been declining in popularity because of pandemic. Three cabinet ministers have resigned within a month. Still, it continues to have basic supporters, calling on governors of states that open businesses.
We gotta get to work. If we're gonna die, let's die. We need to go back to normal”, a supporter of it tells reporters.
But many mayors and mayors throughout Brazil want to continue with restrictive measures.
“I agree with Governor and mayor”, says one resident. “I disagree with the president because he thinks he's a game. You're doing poor work. Three ministers left in one month and said things that should not be said. That scares us even more”.
Tragic balance comes amid warnings that the health system in many large cities in Latin America is at risk of collapse. More than 85 percent of beds in intensive therapies at Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo have been occupied. The outbreak of the health crisis there, has prompted US President Donald Trump to consider stopping trips from Brazil.
