The Kosovo Box Federation on Friday has announced it will participate in next year's boxing World held in Belgrade. That is actually not yet certain, but FBOXK Secretary General Mehmet Bogujevci says there should be no obstacles for best Kosovo boxers to appear in the biggest event of amateur boxing.
Bogujevci can talk about the importance of participating in the World. He can also talk about success in the main event of a sport. Kosovo boxing legend has world silver medals. The silver medal is won right in Belgrade.
It was May 1978 when the second World of amateur boxing was held in Belgrade. The first World was held in Havana, Cuba, in 1974, and the second World was entrusted to then Yugoslavia. At that time, the World was organized every four years, not every two years now.
The self-election team in Yugoslavia to compete in the World was a success. Bogujevci and Sami Busolli were selected from Kosovo. Busolli had stopped in the second war in the 48-kilogram category, by boxer Stephen Muchoki (Key), who had been declared the best ever. Meanwhile Bogujevci went all the way to the finals.
Bogujevci, now 68-year-old, boxed in the category of up to 63.5kg, while winning over Romanian Simion Cbutov, Polish Bogdan Gajda, and semi-final to German Karl-Heinz Krueger. In the finals he lost to Russian Valerie Lviv.
The “were all time top-boxers. The smallest title of my opponents was that of Europe. So they all had big titles, it was extraordinary competition”, it reminded Bogujevci on Saturday, in an interview.
He has shown that the World Belgrade was a very big sporting event, while the interest of extraordinary audiences.
“I've had great support in every touch. Many boxing fans have come from Kosovo to escort my services. They came in organized groups. Faruk Begolli had tickets for all the evenings, but when I boxed I got out of the gym. It didn't mean luck in some of the drugs he had followed, and that's why he left the gym when I boxed and returned right after I finished with”, Boguyev told.
For the Yugoslav team, which won six silver and one bronze medals, Bogujevci says it was very quality. The five-story gold Cuba was declared the most successful country.
We had an extraordinary team. I was captain of the team. As always as I was Captain”, Bogujevci, who has led the highly esteemed generation of Kosovo boxers gathered at the Pristina club, says. Pristina boxing club remains one of the most successful stories of Kosovo sports.
During his career, he has won valuable medals, but that from Belgrade remains the main. Bogujevci acknowledges the outcome was fair in the finals.
Because of strong competition, I arrived in the finals exhausted. I've had very strong snacks to the finals and I haven't been able to offer more in the finals. I boxed last, because of the lots, and the shipment was too big. All the wars were strong to the finals. I have had many facial injuries, and only after going to the doctors of Yugoslavia allowed me to box. If other countries wouldn't let me get into the ring”, Bogujevci said.
Next year he could return to Belgrade as leader of the Kosovo delegation. If Kosovo is allowed participation, it would be for the first time at an international event organised on Serbia's territory.
I hope three-four of our boxers will qualify. If boxers qualify, why not participate. We are accepted with equal rights in the World and European Federation, and we have guaranteed the right to participate”.
Bogujevci said that immediately after the movement measures are eased, they will send boxers to Brezovica for basic training.
“Then we can go to Croatia or somewhere else to continue training. We have to start immediately with full training if we want to be qualified. It is imperative that we participate in training camps, face foreign boxers, for our boxers to work with foreign trainers. We don't have to discover warm water. Warm water was discovered in our time by Lah Nimani. Now Driton Kuka of Judo has discovered it. We just have to follow his model to be successful”, Mehmet Bogujevci stressed.
