COVID-19's pandemic has also affected the agriculture sector in Kosovo. To overcome this situation, agricultural experts say farmers must continue production so that the country is not affected by the lack of food.
Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture Imer Rusinovac has said that the farmers should respect all measures recommended by the Ministry of Health, but things must be done.
“In the corner of food production, we need to be very careful and very cautious so that we don't overlook such a thing about the fact that this sector requires a continuous producer, regardless of the time periods we spend. All farmers should respect all the measures recommended by the Ministry of Health, but the jobs must be done because we can face a lack of our agro-ecological potential”, Rusinovac said.
According to him, the funds allocated by the Fiscal Emergency Pack are not sufficient and that the state should intervene in agriculture.
In such situations, the state must intervene and, of priority, be health and agriculture. As long as they've found a method of stimulus with this emergency agricultural package, I think the funds that have been allocated from 5m euros are insufficient for the access to food production from our conditions. If the pandemic period will last, we will face insufficient food, the fact that the overwhelming portion of the previous years has been dependent on the mind-blowing food agents. So, the priority should be local food production”, he said of Telegrafi.
In this regard, even incumbent Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development Minister Besian Mustafa had indicated that the work of farmers in Kosovo would not stop, despite measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Mustafa via a Facebook writing said that the curfew for farmers will be between 0600 and 8:00.
With my request that we create job opportunities for farmers, who are now at the peak of their field work, will be worth relief, only for farmers: The turnover clock for individual farmers equipped with Farm Identification Number (NIF), just to work on their farms, will be from 0600 to 800”, Mustafa wrote.
Under the 11th measure presented in the Fiscal Emergency Pack, it is projected to have increased grant budgets and subsidies for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development for growth of agricultural production, worth 5m euros.
