Recent weeks have circulated images of popular mafia groups distributing basic products for the poorest in southern regions: Campa, Calabria, Sicily and Pulia.
“Million people work in black, which means they have no income for more than one me and have no idea when they can get back to work. If the state does not intervene soon to assist these families, the mafia will provide its services, placing control on people's lives”, said Nicolaa Gratteri, anti-mafia investigators at the Katanzaro Prosecutor's Office.
There have been reports that owners of small shops in the southern part of the country have faced pressure to offer free food, while police are patrolling in stores to prevent theft.
In recent days, police in Naples have increased their presence in the poorest parts of the city since several people linked to the group “Carorra”, the Nazi mafia group, have organised food distribution.
In Palermo, brother of a group chief “Cosa Nostra” has distributed food in Zen County, where the mafia has considerable presence. He later said he only did charity and attacked journalists for reporting, writes the Guardian”, Report Express.
The distribution of food is an old tactic as the mafia itself, where its bosses first do so without asking for anything in return.
