It's a popular scientific concept that the length of our entire life depends on our genes. Some experts even study what they call the <x0 length of life expectancy”, which is a gene that is responsible for restoring DNA more efficiently. Recent research suggests that our life span depends not only on genetics but also on how we speak.
A group of scientists from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Yeshiva University in the United States studied the number of words we speak and how they affect our longevity. They found that people who speak a lot, present more tolerant, positive, and optimistic behavior and ideas, have a better quality of life, which increases their life expectancy.
The study, conducted by Dr. Nir Barzillai, studied 250 seniors between 95 and 100 years of age, focusing on the relationship between their personalities and their genetics. Personal analysis revealed some entertaining results: People who perceived themselves as more positive also enjoyed speaking a lot.
And they are not the only ones who have reached this conclusion. Spanish psychiatrist Louis Rojas Marcos explains in his book “We are what we speak”, that people who speak more than 15,000 words a day live longer than those who speak less. According to Dr. Rojas Marcos, people live by feeling a sense of fulfillment, are healthier, and enjoy longer life.
His findings may support studies that explain why women live longer than men, they usually talk more because of their high levels of FOXP2 protein, also known as “speech protein”. Scientists believe the highest FOXP2 levels make women speak 20,000 words a day on average, while men say only about 7,000 words a day. It is a difference of 13,000 words worth mentioning.
