The spread of the virus, which has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, is the latest test of social networking ability to curb false and dangerous claims.
Facebook cited bleaching as a false claim to the circulated healing, saying that “will begin to remove content with false claims or conspiracy theories that have been warned by major global health organisations and local health authorities, which could cause harm to people who believe in them.”
The company has an existing policy to remove the content considered a threat to the physical damage of users, and has used that policy in the past to remove vaccine-related deninforms, though in rare cases.
Coronavius is receiving special attention on the internet, once again placing US-based social media companies. in protecting their efforts to curb the spread of false information.
Scientists and journalists have documented an increasing number of cases of deninforms related to the virus, ranging from racist explanations of the origin of the disease to false claims of miraculous healing.
