Italians baptized him as “Forrest Gump” on social networks, such as the hero of a 1994 movie played by Tom Hanks, who spends thousands of miles throughout the United States.

Police stopped Italian epic walking at 2am in Fano, on the Adriatic coast, a week after he left Como in the north.

The man, 48, received a 400-euro fine from police for violating the curfew.

History was reported for the first time by the Bologna-based newspaper Il Resto del Carloin, but soon became viral in Italian media.

Several comments in social media presented the man as a hero and criticised the police for the fine.

One said he should have been rewarded, not fined, and given a new pair of shoes.

Another praised the man for leaving for his anger instead of resorting to violence.

The man told the police that he had walked on foot and had not used transportation.

I came here on foot, I didn't use any transport tools. On the way, I met people who offered me food and drink. I'm fine, just a little tired, he said” as he walked an average of 60 miles [60 km] a day.

The police found him walking around in a coastline.

After checking his ID on the database, they discovered that his wife had reported him missing, so they contacted him and she travelled to Fauno to get him.

Italian reports did not say how she reacted when she learned he had received a fine of $400.
