The 35-year-old this year became the most successful driver in Forum 1 at all times. He equated the Ferrari legend, Michael Schumacher, with seven titles while defeating the German with 91 wins in the race.
The only colored driver in this sport, who grew up in social shelter as a grandson of immigrants from the Caribbean, used his profile as a campaign for unity and spoke against racial injustices.
Hamilton is the fourth driver of Forum 1 to be honoured with this title after Australian Jack Brabham, Stryling Moss and three-time champion Jackie Stewart. However, he is the only driver to receive the title while still active in the sport.
The winner of Tour de France, Bradley Wiggins, runner Mo Farah, tennis player Andy Murray, and the Hiker Alastair Cook, who are also active athletes.
